It is a phrase that is taking over the beauty and skincare industries - but what really is Slow Beauty?
Slow Beauty is a philosophy that encourages people to focus on not only natural beauty but also self-care, positive body image and general overall wellness.
It can cover all aspects of your lifestyle - not just your beauty routines. From sustainability to sleeping patterns, slow beauty can cover a whole range of topics.
Natural Beauty
It’s important to take notice of what ingredients you are putting onto your skin, as a lot of the time these can be absorbed into your bloodstream. Rather than using products full of synthetic ingredients and chemicals why not try some natural and organic products? These products use natural ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Shea Butter, Aloe Vera and numerous vitamins and fatty acids to give your skin the treats it deserves.
And just because a product may be made from natural ingredients, it doesn’t mean that they are any less effective. Natural ingredients not only do most if not all things that synthetics can but they’re also generally better for you.
Natural ingredients are a lot more gentle on the skin as opposed to abrasive chemicals, meaning that natural products can be used on all skin types - likely even very sensitive skin (although it's always good to check first). Also, because these ingredients are more gentle on your skin, it probably means that they’re more gentle on our planet too. Chemicals from non-natural products can be released into the air and water creating a negative impact on the environment.
Self-Care
Another topic of Slow Beauty is self care. A big part of the Slow Beauty phenomenon is your wellbeing and looking after yourself as best as you can. It’s important to put yourself first and look after your mental, emotional and physical health.
People might be experiencing higher levels of stress currently and one way to try and help may be by treating yourself to a little bit of self care. If you have a little bit more time at home than usual, why not take more time for yourself? Read that book that has been sitting on your bedside table for months, or ring that friend that you haven't caught up with in a while.
A great way to calm your mind and body is with a new skincare ritual. The great thing about using natural products in your skincare routine is that often they have amazing smells and textures for you to enjoy.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a great way to incorporate slow beauty into your routines. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils to enhance the body and mind. Although recently gaining recognition in both the science and medicine fields, it has actually been around for many years. Ancient cultures in places such as China and India used to incorporate plant extracts in balms and oils to use for both medicinal and religious purposes.
Each different essential oil has a variety of benefits and effects, you can even combine oils to create even more benefits. In general aromatherapy is said to help improve sleep quality, reduce stress and anxiety, sooth sore joints and even help to fight bacteria.
We love using essential oils to fragrance our products and make the experience of using them that little bit more luxurious. Our African Orange Body Lotion uses numerous essential oils such as blood orange and vanilla alongside spicy black pepper and cedarwood. The aroma of blood orange quenches the nerves, relaxes the spirit and evokes cheer. This works great with the cedarwood essential oil which is soothing and grounding. These make the African Orange Body Lotion a great lotion to use when you are perhaps feeling a little bit nervous about something or perhaps just need an uplifting boost.
Our Gentle Cleansing Melt also includes wonderful essentials oils such as vanilla. As well as having amazing anti oxidant properties, vanilla also gives off a sweet scent that is found to be relaxing and calming. This makes our Gentle Cleansing Melt the perfect cleanser to use in the evening to give you the chance to wind down. Not only is it great for gently removing any stubborn makeup whilst nourishing and cleansing your skin - but it's also great to use for a quick facial massage. Why not follow our acupressure massage in our Self Care Rituals blog post to really take some time for yourself and really appreciate the smells and textures of the product as it soaks into your skin.

However, we don't just like using essential oils in our products for their smell. These natural oils also have great qualities for your skin itself. For example, our Skin Saviour Body Oil uses essential oils such as rosehip and mandarin, which not only smell beautiful but also have amazing benefits for your skin. Rosehip oil helps to fight signs of ageing and keeps the skin nourished and hydrated. It is also rich in bio-retinol and helps promote cellular renewal and improves the appearance of scars. The mandarin essential oil used in the Skin Saviour Body Oil is rich in Vitamin C and E and can be used to help with stretch marks and scars.
