What Is Maskne? How To Help Tackle Spots From Masks

Normally we would be writing about one of our new face masks, and all of the amazing benefits it would have for your skin. But over the last few months, we’ve become more accustomed to a different type of mask.

We’re all now wearing masks in public to help do our bit in preventing the spread of Covid 19, and whilst this is brilliant and exactly what we need to be doing, it is still really important to look after your skin underneath.

Face coverings like masks are now mandatory in enclosed spaces in England, these include shops, banks and public transport. This means that more of us are wearing them on a more regular basis. You can get various different types from reusable fabric face coverings which we love because they reduce waste and are more sustainable, and they come in lots of different colours and patterns, to the disposable surgical style masks that seem to be a common choice. However, whilst wearing masks is a great step forward in tackling the virus, there are some negatives too.

From the start of the virus, those workers who spent long hours wearing face masks alerted us to the problems they were suffering with. From sensitive, irritable skin, to breakouts and rashes, masks seemed to be either bringing about new skin concerns or magnifying those that already existed.

Getting spots from wearing face masks is really common, so here are some ways that you can care for your skin under your masks!

Wash Your Masks Regularly

If you are using reusable masks it is so important to wash it regularly. Not only will this help to avoid the spread of any infection, but it means that you’re also going to avoid putting any bacteria that may have gathered back onto your skin.

Cleanse Your Skin

As you may have noticed, underneath our masks our skin can begin to produce more sweat than usual, and you may also know that excess sweat and oil production is one of the most common causes of breakouts. This is where we can start to see ‘maskne’ appearing, the new term given to those pesky spots that appear from masks.

A simple three step skincare routine using natural ingredients such as Salicylic Acid is all that you will need to reduce the appearance of these breakouts and help to prevent them in the future, why not try this one out if you’re suffering from maskne?

Step One:  Use our Daily Detox Facial Wash to clean, detoxify and rebalance your skin. This is a delicately foaming facial cleanser that will cleanse away impurities and leave skin feeling smooth and soft. It also includes Moringa Peptides which help to defend against pollution to protect your skin further.

Step Two:  After washing your face, you could apply our Liquid Radiance Glycolic Toner onto a reusable cotton pad and wipe over your face. This liquid exfoliator helps to boost exfoliation whilst reducing irritation on your skin. It also contains Willow Bark, a natural source of Salicylic Acid, which helps to boost cell turnover and tackle breakouts, promoting clarity.

Target Breakouts

Step Three:  If you are experiencing more breakouts than usual, apply our Rainforest Rescue Blemish Serum. You can either apply this all over your face, or directly onto any problems areas such as the chin or around the mouth. This serum helps to decrease sebum production and blemishes leaving your skin clearer, whilst also helping to prevent future breakouts.

Soothe Irritation

Wearing face masks for prolonged periods of time can also cause irritation for some people, so it is important to find products that will soothe any irritation and hydrate dry skin.

Look for products which include any inflammatory ingredients and natural oils and butters that will nourish and care for your skin. Our Daily Renew Facial Cream is a moisturiser formulated to soothe and hydrate skin. It contains organic Argan Oil which is high in vitamin E and fatty acids, known to help repair damaged skin whilst preventing further damage.

So, it is really important to wear your mask especially in enclosed public spaces like when you’re going to the supermarket or catching public transport, but there are definitely things that we can do to make wearing them easier, and look after our skin at the same time.
